10 Onboard Missing Alaska Plane, Search Continues
Incident Summary
February 6, 2025: A Bering Air flight carrying a Cessna Caravan took off from Unalakleet and headed east for Nome, Alaska at 2:37 p.m. On board were nine passengers and the pilot. It was expected to land at 4 p.m. It didn’t, raising alarm bells and a large-scale search.
After establishing that the aircraft was overdue, Alaska State Troopers and the NTSB commenced their search and rescue operations. The search teams are trying to find the last known coordinates of the plane so as to reduce the area for the search.
Ground searches are being carried out from Nome and White Mountain by the Nome Volunteer Fire Department. Aerial searches have been only for short durations and had to be suspended due to adverse weather conditions with poor visibility. Bad weather has also been dangerous; the department had cautioned against unsanctioned search parties.
Weather Hazards
The region’s weather has not been the most cooperative, with potentially life-threatening winter conditions throughout the region, according to reports, which has posed a good obstacle for the search process. This has restricted search efforts only to aerial operations, with few on the ground so far.
The Norton Sound Health Corporation has kept its medics ready to respond fast to a medical need in case the aircraft were located with survivors. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department called for community members to end personal searches and wait for coordinated efforts while urging all people to beware of hazardous weather conditions favorite
At the tail end of the early Friday of 7th February 2025, the aircraft remained technically “overdue,” as there was yet no confirmation of a crash. The search and rescue teams, however, would continue to do their work in difficult moments; they are also hoping for something positive. Perhaps, the team efforts of collaborative local, state, and federal agencies already point towards a serious commitment to locate that missing aircraft and also bring closure to those families with the victims involved.
A search and rescue operation has been initiated for the Bering Air flight departing Unalakleet bound for Nome, where it is still hoped that maybe, somehow along the route it was lost without incident. Still intent on all possible efforts toward locating the aircraft, all to keep all aboard safe and sound. This still a fluid situation; more info when available.
